48-Hour Florida FAST Math Study Plan for Grades 3–6
A practical two-day Florida FAST Math study plan for Grades 3–6, with a short diagnostic, focused practice, parent prompts, and test-day prep.
What can a parent accomplish in 48 hours?
In two days, a parent can often identify one or two priority skills, address a recurring error pattern, and help a child approach the test with a clear plan. It is not enough time to reteach an entire grade. The useful goal is focused review, not perfect coverage.
Before the first practice session
- Choose the correct grade. Review grade-level material rather than borrowing a sibling's easier or harder work.
- Find a recent classroom assignment, teacher note, or FAST reporting-category result if one is available.
- Prepare scratch paper, pencils, and a quiet place. Grade 6 students may also practice with a four-function calculator after estimating first.
- Tell your child the plan is short: one diagnostic, two focused practice blocks, one mixed review, and then rest.
Day 1: diagnose, then teach one useful correction
- Diagnostic (15–20 minutes): Use four to six mixed questions. Ask the child to show work without coaching.
- Break (10 minutes): Step away from the work. Do not review errors during the break.
- Focused lesson (20 minutes): Choose the error pattern that affected the most questions and reteach that single skill.
- Independent check (10 minutes): Give two new problems using different wording. Stop when the child can explain the method.
Classify each missed question before assigning more practice. Was the problem misunderstood? Was the wrong operation selected? Was the setup correct but the calculation inaccurate? Or was the answer missing a label or unit? The type of error determines what to review.
Parent prompts that reveal understanding
- What is the question asking you to find?
- Which numbers or facts matter, and which do not?
- Can you draw a model, number line, table, or labeled diagram?
- Why did you choose that operation?
- About how large should the answer be?
- What unit or label belongs with the answer?
Day 2: practice choosing a method and checking the answer
- Warm-up (5–10 minutes): Solve two familiar questions successfully before introducing mixed work.
- Mixed review (20–25 minutes): Use six to eight grade-level questions from several skills. Do not label the topic for the child.
- Error correction (10 minutes): Redo only the missed questions and explain what changed.
- Test-tool check (10 minutes): Practice scratch-paper organization and the grade-appropriate online tools or reference sheet.
End while the child is still working accurately. One final successful explanation is more useful than extending practice until fatigue creates new careless errors.
Choose the right priority for Grades 3–6
- Grade 3: check place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division situations, fractions, area, and perimeter.
- Grade 4: check multi-digit operations, fraction and decimal reasoning, angles, measurement, and data.
- Grade 5: check multi-digit multiplication and division, fraction and decimal operations, expressions, coordinate graphs, volume, and data.
- Grade 6: check rational-number operations, ratios and percent, equations and inequalities, geometry, statistics, and appropriate calculator use.
Use the FastMathKit grade guide for a short diagnostic and the official reporting-category ranges. The 48-hour plan should concentrate on the child's error pattern, not give equal time to every item in this list.
The final evening
- Stop heavy practice early and avoid introducing a new method.
- Review one strategy card or one corrected example rather than a full worksheet.
- Prepare anything the school requested and confirm the morning routine.
- Protect sleep and keep the conversation focused on effort, careful reading, and showing work.
