What is on the Grade 5 FAST Math test?

Grade 5 FAST Mathematics gives similar weight to four areas: whole-number operations, fraction and decimal operations, algebraic reasoning, and a combined geometry/measurement/data category. The biggest review mistake is practicing computation alone while ignoring models, relationships, and word problems.

Grade 5 FAST Mathematics blueprint

The percentage ranges are planning guides from Florida's official test blueprint. They describe the share of operational items assigned to each reporting category; they do not predict the exact questions a student will receive on a computer-adaptive assessment.

Grade 5 reporting categories and blueprint ranges
Reporting categoryShare of test
Number Sense and Operations with Whole Numbers23–29%
Number Sense and Operations with Fractions and Decimals23–29%
Algebraic Reasoning23–29%
Geometry, Measurement, Data Analysis and Probability23–29%

High-value Grade 5 skills to review

  • Multiply multi-digit whole numbers and divide up to five-digit dividends by two-digit divisors, interpreting remainders correctly.
  • Work with decimals through thousandths and add or subtract fractions with unlike denominators, including mixed numbers.
  • Analyze numerical patterns and relationships and represent real-world situations with expressions or equations.
  • Plot ordered pairs in the first quadrant; classify figures; and solve problems involving area, volume, and numerical data.

These skill groups are not a promise that every benchmark will appear for every student. They are a parent-friendly summary of the official grade-level blueprint and B.E.S.T. parent guidance.

Quick Grade 5 diagnostic questions

Have your child show the work and explain the choice of operation or model. These are original FastMathKit practice questions, not released or official FAST items.

  1. Multiply 245 × 136.
  2. Divide 3,216 ÷ 24.
  3. Find 2/3 + 3/4. Write the result as a mixed number.
  4. A rectangular prism is 8 units long, 5 units wide, and 3 units high. Find its volume.
  5. Find the mean of 4, 6, 7, 8, and 10.

Common mistakes worth checking

  • Dropping a partial product or misaligning place values during multi-digit multiplication.
  • Treating a remainder as automatically final instead of interpreting what it means in the situation.
  • Adding fractions with unlike denominators before finding equivalent fractions with a common denominator.
  • Using square units for volume instead of cubic units, or confusing a coordinate's x- and y-values.

When an answer is wrong, ask whether the mistake came from understanding the problem, choosing a method, carrying out the calculation, or labeling the result. That diagnosis is more useful than simply assigning more of the same questions.

A focused 48-hour Grade 5 plan

  1. Day 1, session 1: Complete the diagnostic questions and identify whether each error came from setup, computation, or interpretation.
  2. Day 1, session 2: Review fraction and decimal place value, then work on the weakest blueprint category.
  3. Day 2, session 1: Solve a mixed set that includes a word problem, an expression or pattern, and a geometry/data question.
  4. Day 2, final check: Estimate before multiplying or dividing, label units, and verify that a fraction answer is reasonable.

Grade 5 test length and tools

The scheduled time is not necessarily a hard stopping point. Florida states that students who are still actively working may receive the time needed to finish, up to the end of the school day. Confirm the exact test date and any approved accommodations with the school.
