What is on the Grade 6 FAST Math test?

Grade 6 FAST Mathematics places the largest share of the blueprint on number sense and operations, with the remaining items divided between algebraic reasoning and geometry/data/probability. Review should combine accurate computation with ratios, equations, and interpretation.

The percentage ranges are planning guides from Florida's official test blueprint. They describe the share of operational items assigned to each reporting category; they do not predict the exact questions a student will receive on a computer-adaptive assessment.

Number Sense and Operations33–42%
Algebraic Reasoning25–36%
Geometry, Data Analysis and Probability25–36%

High-value Grade 6 skills to review

  • Operate with integers and positive rational numbers and move among fraction, decimal, and percent forms.
  • Interpret ratios and unit rates, solve percent problems, and convert measurements within the same system.
  • Translate between words and algebraic expressions, solve one-step equations, and represent situations with inequalities.
  • Use all four quadrants of the coordinate plane and solve problems involving area, surface area, volume, and statistical displays.

These skill groups are not a promise that every benchmark will appear for every student. They are a parent-friendly summary of the official grade-level blueprint and B.E.S.T. parent guidance.

Quick Grade 6 diagnostic questions

Have your child show the work and explain the choice of operation or model. These are original FastMathKit practice questions, not released or official FAST items.

  1. Evaluate −8 + 13 and explain the direction of movement on a number line.
  2. Divide 3/4 ÷ 2/5. Write the answer as an improper fraction and a mixed number.
  3. Three notebooks cost $18. What is the unit rate in dollars per notebook?
  4. Find 25% of 64.
  5. Solve 5x = 45.
  6. A triangle has a base of 12 units and a height of 7 units. Find its area.

Common mistakes worth checking

  • Applying integer sign rules without first identifying the operation.
  • Dividing fractions without multiplying by the reciprocal of the divisor.
  • Writing a ratio but not reducing it to the requested unit rate.
  • Translating words into an expression or equation in the wrong order.
  • Using base × height for a triangle without multiplying by one-half, or confusing surface area with volume.

When an answer is wrong, ask whether the mistake came from understanding the problem, choosing a method, carrying out the calculation, or labeling the result. That diagnosis is more useful than simply assigning more of the same questions.

A focused 48-hour Grade 6 plan

  1. Day 1, session 1: Complete the six diagnostic questions without a calculator first, then use the calculator to check permitted computations.
  2. Day 1, session 2: Review the weakest category, giving extra attention to number sense because it has the largest blueprint range.
  3. Day 2, session 1: Solve a mixed set containing rational numbers, a ratio or percent, an equation, and a geometry or statistics problem.
  4. Day 2, final check: Practice the online four-function calculator, estimate before entering numbers, and reread every answer with its units and context.

Grade 6 test length and tools

The scheduled time is not necessarily a hard stopping point. Florida states that students who are still actively working may receive the time needed to finish, up to the end of the school day. Confirm the exact test date and any approved accommodations with the school.
