Florida FAST Math Multiplication and Division Practice by Grade
Review the multiplication and division skills expected in Florida FAST Math for Grades 3–6, with original worked examples and grade-specific practice links.
What multiplication and division skills should parents practice?
Multiplication and division develop from equal groups and fact relationships into multi-digit algorithms, fraction operations, decimals, and rates. A child who knows a procedure may still need practice choosing the correct operation and interpreting a remainder.
What changes from grade to grade
| Grade | High-value skills |
|---|---|
| Grade 3 | Equal groups, arrays, related multiplication and division facts, area, and one-step situations. |
| Grade 4 | Multi-digit multiplication and division, estimation, factor relationships, and interpreting remainders. |
| Grade 5 | Multiply multi-digit whole numbers, divide by two-digit divisors, and connect multiplication or division to fractions and decimals. |
| Grade 6 | Operate with positive rational numbers and use multiplication or division in ratios, rates, percentages, area, and volume. |
Multiplication and division appear in different FAST reporting categories by grade. Use the grade guide or score report to see whether the skill falls under multiplicative reasoning, whole-number operations, fraction and decimal operations, or broader number sense.

| Grade | Try this | Checked reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Grade 3 | Eight bags hold 7 oranges each. How many oranges? | 8 × 7 = 56. A related check is 56 ÷ 7 = 8. |
| Grade 4 | Find 1,248 ÷ 6. | 1,200 ÷ 6 = 200 and 48 ÷ 6 = 8, so the quotient is 208. |
| Grade 5 | Find 3,216 ÷ 24. | 24 × 100 = 2,400 and 24 × 34 = 816. The quotient is 134. |
| Grade 6 | Three notebooks cost $18. What is the unit rate? | $18 ÷ 3 = $6 per notebook. |
Common mistakes to diagnose
- Choosing an operation from one keyword without considering what the question asks.
- Losing a place-value position in a multi-digit product or quotient.
- Treating a remainder as the final answer without interpreting it in context.
- Accepting a calculator entry without estimating the expected size first.
Ask the child to explain the first step aloud. That usually reveals whether the difficulty is understanding the problem, choosing a strategy, calculating, or labeling the result.
A focused 15-minute parent routine
- Ask: Are we finding a total, the number of groups, or the size of each group?
- Estimate the answer before doing exact work.
- Have the child solve one computation and one word problem at the same grade level.
- Check the result with the inverse operation and explain what the answer means.
