What decimal skills should parents practice?

Decimal work begins with place value and fraction connections, then expands to operations and rational-number relationships. Grade 3 families should use whole-number and fraction practice; decimal benchmarks in this guide begin with Grade 4.

What changes from grade to grade

FAST Math Decimals Practice skills by grade
GradeHigh-value skills
Grade 4Relate tenths and hundredths to fractions, read and compare decimals, and reason about money or measurement contexts.
Grade 5Read through thousandths; compare, round, add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals in mathematical and real-world problems.

Grade 4Which is greater, 0.64 or 0.604?Write 0.64 as 0.640. Because 640 thousandths is greater than 604 thousandths, 0.64 is greater.
Grade 5Find $12.45 + $3.80.Align decimal points and add by place value: $16.25.
Grade 6Write 0.35 as a percent and fraction.0.35 = 35%. It is 35/100, which simplifies to 7/20.

Common mistakes to diagnose

  • Assuming the number with more decimal digits is larger.
  • Aligning the final digits instead of aligning decimal points.
  • Dropping a zero that is needed to show equivalent place values while comparing or calculating.
  • Moving a decimal point by memory without explaining the factor of ten or percent relationship.

Ask the child to explain the first step aloud. That usually reveals whether the difficulty is understanding the problem, choosing a strategy, calculating, or labeling the result.

A focused 15-minute parent routine

  1. Read each number aloud by place value before comparing it.
  2. Use trailing zeros to write both numbers to the same place when comparing.
  3. Estimate a reasonable answer before calculating with decimals.
  4. Connect one problem to money, measurement, a fraction, or a percent.
